Celebrate New Year Without a Bang

Image
New Year is apparently the grandest celebration of the year. The celebration takes place from New Year's Eve and is often solemnized with great grandiosity. Fireworks are very popular during this season and as such, they are a major part of the New Year tradition. As the New Year comes closer, an increasing number of people are admitted to hospitals, most of which are victims of firecrackers. The Department of Health has issued Department Order 271, series of 2010, in line with the collaborative effort to reduce the incidence of firecracker-related injuries, during the New Year festivity, in conformity with its current strategy. "All DOH hospitals are hereby declared on Code White Alert on December 31, 2010 and January 1, 2011 to prepare their emergency units and ensure the provision of prompt emergency services to injured patients during the holiday revelry". In response to the directive, hospitals have deployed personnel, doctors and nurses in three shifting schedule...

New Year's Resolution for 2011

Image
A few days more to go and we will be saying goodbye to year 2010. After the ferocious year of the tiger, I am looking forward for the docile year of the rabbit - the year 2011. I was born in a year of the rabbit and, with this in mind, I am so hopeful that the year would be a great one for us all. It has become a tradition that every year, we make a New Year's resolution. I started making my own resolution when I was in grade school through the influence of some friends. Each passing year is different from the other but my new year's resolutions seem to be the same every year. My invisible list includes my goals for the year and the plans on how I could achieve those goals. My goals and plans could be different each year but they are all aiming for one ultimate aspiration - CHANGE. I have set my New Year's resolution for this year but forgive me if I cannot share to you some of my "secret" resolutions. Nevertheless, I have already visualized some plans and tha...

Birthday eCards – Surprise Our Loved Ones

Image
Birthdays are special days for us and our loved ones because it is a celebration of life. This is an important day and an essential time to count all our blessings and happiness and forget our pains. Birthday wishes absolutely adds good spirits on our loved ones' birthday. We can make their birthday more special by sending our wishes through cards. If you are the creative type, you may choose to make the cards yourself or, if you don't have enough time, you can surprise your loved ones with birthday ecards . Sending birthday ecards is an excellent way to express our birthday wishes for our loved ones and they reach out faster to them. One very interesting thing about ecards is that we can personalize them and we can say our wishes that come straight from our heart. An ecard with a personalized message shows that we truly care and could make our loved ones realize how we love them and how special they are to us. We don't have to spend a lot of money to show our loved one...

Personal Financial Planning - Protect Your Family from Recession

The global economy is in an ICU (Intensive Care Unit). However, with a bit of flexibility and creativity, we could find ways and means to float above the current economic crisis. We could start by making some changes and adjustments in our lifestyles while making sure that we are still able to meet all the family needs. Here are some tips to protect our family from recession. 1. Pay yourself first. Put money aside for savings first before dividing the rest for the bills and other expenses. Make it a habit to save, even if you can only afford to put aside a small amount at a time. 2. Review your budget. Check your finances and spending habits, then take out all the things that you really do not need. Learn to minimize spending for recreation-related activities. 3. Shop wisely. It is wise to compare prices at different stores and look for bargains. Check out where you can buy things at the lowest prices. 4. Avoid going into debt. Try to pay in cash and track where your money go...

Get that Fantastic Skin

Our skin is the first thing that other people may notice about us. An important component of the skin is the pigment called melanin. It gives us our color and helps protect us from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Taking care of our skin is not merely a matter of vanity, but an important health routine too. There are many skin care products available today - for whitening the complexion, for getting a youthful glow, and for eradicating skin imperfections. However, nothing beats the basic skin care, and healthy skin simply needs care and consideration. Here are simple tips for getting a fantastic skin: 1. Keep it clean. Make sure that you cleanse your skin gently and thoroughly, and that goes not just for your face, but the skin all over your body. Use soap with mild formulation for your facial wash, hand scrubbing and bathing . 2. Be gentle. Even though a hot bath sounds like a relaxing idea, you have to make sure that your water is not too hot. This robs skin of its natural oi...

Personal Blogs Craze

One of the cool aspects of blogging is its broad application potential. Blogs are taking over the internet and information exchange. They can be about anything or anyone with topics ranging from personal reflection to political views. Most newbie bloggers make blogs about their personal life and their family. Personal blogs have become popular. A personal blog is a great way to jot down the things that happen in our life. It is also a good outlet to share our own perspective. When having a personal blog, the first thing we have to keep in mind is safety. A personal blog may seem safe enough since it is nothing more than words on a web page. However, we have to keep a few personal things for ourselves like addresses, phone numbers, and even email addresses. Once we put something up on our blog, it becomes essentially public and we never know who is watching. Always keep safety in mind first, and we are well on our way to a fun and successful blogging experience. Personal blogs have ...

Personalized Christmas Gifts Are More Special

Image
Christmas season is here again. When the "ber" month starts, we could already smell the spirit of Christmas in the air. During this season, the one thing that automatically gets in our mind is gift giving. Thinking of what gifts to buy for our loved ones can be stressful. We have to plan on what gifts are most appropriate and suitable for them that they would surely love. Because of unplanned shopping or impulsive buying, we sometimes end up buying some things that are not worth its price. We should take our time to look around to get as much idea as possible so we could make the right choice of gift within our budget. When you visit the malls, there are various gift items to choose. If you are still unsure on what gift to give, think of making up your very own. A personalized gift for your family and friends could make them feel more special. In whatever gift you choose, it would be more meaningful if you sweeten it up with Christmas Cards . Your loved ones would not only...

My Kids Got Sore Eyes

Image
My two boys had sore eyes last weekend. On Friday afternoon, my eight-year-old son, Kuya , arrived from school with red eyes. He got it from their teacher who chose to attend school despite having sore eyes. I am not sure how many other kids got the infection from her. I told Kuya not to touch his eyes to prevent further infection to the other eye and to lessen its possible spread to the whole household. He did follow me but eventually, while sleeping, he unconsciously rubbed his eyes with the face towel he kept on his bed. When he woke up the next day, he had two red eyes! My toddler got sore eyes too! We treated their eyes with Terramycin eye ointment and the redness were gone within a day.

Music Monday #7 - Dirty Dancing: Time of My Life

Image
Dirty Dancing is a 1987 romantic film made in the United States. Written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino, the film features Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Cynthia Rhodes, and Jerry Orbach. The story is a coming of age drama that documents a teenaged woman's rebellion against her father by starting a relationship with a dance instructor during a family summer vacation. Almost a third of the film involves dancing scenes choreographed by Kenny Ortega (later famous for High School Musical). Originally a low-budget film by a new studio and with no major stars (except Broadway legend Jerry Orbach in a supporting role), Dirty Dancing became a massive box office hit. As of 2009, it earned over $214 million worldwide. It was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video, and the Dirty Dancing soundtrack generated two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", which won both the Golden Globe an...

Save Space with Contemporary Furnitures

Image
We had so many paint cans at the back of our house. I kept them for future use. Actually, I was planning to use them to plant some vegetables and flowering plants. Our little garden does not have enough space for additional plants. With plants on the cans, I could just easily hang them to save some space. This would also be a great decoration for our living room especially the flowering ones. We only have a small living room. With three active kids, especially our little toddler, we need every little space we have for the kids' activities like play, play and play! Well, my kids are just too busy everyday. Hubby and I planned on purchasing a Contemporary Furniture for the living room. A living room sofa is one of our priorities. We realized we have to get one because whenever our relatives and friends come to visit, we use our dining seats for them. It would be more comfortable if we have them seated on a very nice and soft sofa sets. I have one particular sofa design in my mi...

Music Monday #6 - Another One Bites the Dust by Queen

Image
Another One Bites the Dust Steve walks warily down the street with the brim pulled way down low Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet, machine gun's ready to go Are you ready? Hey, are you ready for this? Are you hanging on the edge of your seat? Out of the doorway the bullets rip to the sound of the beat, Yeah Another one bites the dust Another one bites the dust And another one gone And another one gone Another one bites the dust Hey, I'm gonna get you too Another one bites the dust How do you think I'm gonna get along without you when you're gone? You took me for everything that I had and kicked me out on my own Are you happy? Are you satisfied? How long can you stand the heat? Out of the doorway the bullets rip to the sound of the beat (Look out) Another one bites the dust Another one bites the dust And another one gone And another one gone Another one bites the dust Hey, I'm gonna get you too Another one bites the dust HEY O...

Sinabawang Upo and Salted Fish Recipe

Image
This is a one-dish meal with fish and vegetables. This meal is a practical way of providing good nutrition for the whole family. The fish in this dish is a good source of protein, while the upo is a natural source of iron, calcium and B vitamins. This is so easy to prepare and it is light for my pockets. :) Sinabawang Upo and Salted Fish Ingredients: 2 tbsp cooking oil 1 thumb ginger, sliced 1 tbsp crushed garlic 1/4 cup sliced onion 2 cups shredded salted fish (whole salted fish, soaked in water for 2 hours then shredded) 3 cups cubed, seeded upo 1 liter water 1 11g chicken broth cube 2 cups malunggay leaves Procedure: Heat oil. Sauté ginger, garlic and onion until limp and fragrant. Stir in salted fish and cook for 2 minutes. Add in upo and cook for another 30 seconds. Pour in water and bring to a boil. Add chicken broth cube. Simmer for another 5 minutes. Stir-in malunggay leaves. Serve hot.

I Failed and I Am Guilty

Wish I could have more than enough time for my kids. With my work schedule [I'm on a graveyard shift], household chores and a toddler that took most of my time (and energy), I could barely have time to help them out with their studies. I could not remember the last time I have helped them with their homework and school projects. It must have been a long time! Sigh* One of the many responsibilities of a good parent is to help and assist their kids with their education. With this, I failed – I'm guilty. But that does not make me a bad parent, does it? I'm trying to stretch my time and energy. My kids are busy preparing for their exams. It's their first grading exam and they are trying their best to have good marks. It has always been their dream [and our dream for them] to be on the honors list. Will they make it? I'm crossing my fingers. I just remembered when I took the entrance exam at Xavier University, my mother was with me. We brought snacks and drinks, an...

Music Monday #5 - A Love Song

Image
A Love Song Why do people cry When they hear the word goodbye In a love song? Tears are sure to fall When you know they gave it all In a love song. Somehow two lovers get a chance At a beautiful romance And you wish it could be you. ‘cause everybody’s needing what the singers all are singing in a love song. It can tear you apart ‘cause a word can break a heart in a love song. They say all the things you feel And they make it sound so real In a love song. It seems that everything they say Is said in such a way That we believe it’s true. ‘cause everybody’s needing what the singers all are singing in a love song. Each of us know there’s no guarantee we’ll ever find love. And in the songs that we share The heartache is there To remind us. New love brings a thrill And we know it always will In a love song. Happiness can leave But it helps if we believe In a love song. There’s a part of you and me In every memory That tells us who we are. And...

D' Family Park – Great Place for a Family Outing

Image
Our first visit at D' Family Park It has been more than a year since we last visited D' Family Park in Talamban. It is the first park of its kind in Cebu. It offers an alternative and wholesome recreation site within the city while promoting the protection and regeneration of plants and animals. Preventive Maintenance for Washing Machine

Dirt and grime build up quickly inside the washing machine. It may result in a foul smell, which can easily transfer to your clothes. Cleaning washing machines on a regular basis will definitely keep it fresh. Here are some simple ways to clean your washing machine: Wash the tub with clean water after every use. This removes the dirt inside the washing machine. Remove solid residue found inside the machine. Then with a cleaning cloth, wipe the interior surface. Wipe the exterior surface of the washing machine with cleaning cloth and all-purpose cleaner or dish soap. Clean the outside vent once a year and make sure it opens when the dryer is on and closes properly when the dryer is off.

Mountain Resort Summer Outing 2010

Image
We do have a company summer outing annually. Most of the summer outings were held on beach resorts with lovely wide swimming pools and enticing blue seas. Most beach resorts require proper swimming attires so you could enjoy the pools. Conservatives wear shorts and spaghettis, others wear one-piece swimsuit and the more confident ones wear beautiful two-piece bikinis. Oh, well, I do sometimes imagine myself wearing two-piece bikinis and always end up with a big laugh. With those stretch marks and "baby" fats caused by three pregnancies, I would make a hilarious picture. I know science could make some miracles on those sites but since I could not afford yet professional services like Dr. Dulin 's, I'll just wear suits that could hide those unsightly marks. Last year's summer outing was great, they say. Sadly, I was not able to attend because I was confined in the hospital celebrating another "motherhood" stage - giving birth to my third child. This...

Preventive Maintenance for Refrigerator

Image
We store our foods in the refrigerator, so it is very important to keep it clean and germ-free. Improperly stored foods, leaks and spills are possible nesting grounds for bacteria. To prevent our family from getting food-borne diseases, we have to make sure that our refrigerator is debris-free for it to run smoothly. Here are some simple steps to clean our refrigerator: Wash the shelves with mild detergent and warm water. Use disinfectant to kill bacteria. Wipe the gaskets whenever there is debris or clean it at least once every three to four months to keep the cold air flowing continuously. Clean the refrigerator’s exterior face with hot water and dish soap when it shows any off coloring. Clean the coils in your refrigerator by using a handheld vacuum to remove any loose particles. You may vacuum every 6 to 12 months. If you don't have a vacuum cleaner, wipe the coils with a dry cloth every 3 months.

Preventive Maintenance for Appliances

Like most mothers, our home is my haven. I take great measures in taking care of our home. I don't care if my hands get dirty as long as my home is neat and clean! However, with three kids around the house (which includes a frisky toddler), keeping it neat is close to impossible. There is one aspect to cleaning the house that I usually overlook. That is, having a regular maintenance check up for our appliances. Most high-quality appliances are designed to last for a long period of time. However, if we don’t give them the proper care, we might shorten the time that we have them in good working condition. Preventive maintenance on our appliances keeps them working at their best. It also helps them to last for as long as possible. Regular maintenance saves us from possible list of repairs that may prove to be expensive later on.

First Hair Cut Beliefs

It has been a family practice to have the first hair cut when baby turns one year old. Before going to any salon, we'll cut a few hair strands and insert them to a page in a book. It was believed that the child would become smart or would excel in some fields depending on the kind of book where the hair was inserted. Is this a joke? I personally do not believe this crap but I do it anyway, hahaha! We won't lose anything here if this is not true but, if it is, then baby will grow smart. I did this to my first two kids and I will do it again to my baby (though he is not a baby anymore, I still consider him my baby). Oh, well, huh. Belief or No Belief, we are going to have baby's first hair cut. His hair has grown long and thin, and it becomes unruly especially after getting out of bed. I did the first hair cuts with my first two kids. However, with the second one, I went to a salon and let the hair experts finish the job. I realized then that it's more difficult to cu...

How Do You Spell A Word?

My daughter had a spelling exam and their teacher let them spell the word she pronounced as "wither". She asked her teacher what she means but her teacher did not mind her because it was an exam. So she spelled the word as how she heard her teacher - wither. The result – she misspelled the word. Confused? Well, what their teacher really meant was "weather" and not "wither". She complained to me that their teacher does not know how to pronounce the words correctly so she got wrong in their exam. I just told my daughter, "Next time, you ask your teacher to use the word in a sentence so that no matter how she wrongly pronounces the word, at least you know what the word she needs you to spell". I was left wondering how their teacher could effectively teach when she can't even correctly pronounce some simple English words. Well, some (or many?) teachers need REAL refinement on this aspect.

Strong Earthquake Shake Philippines

Did I just experience an earthquake or was it just my head spinning because of sleepless nights? At 6:52 this morning, I felt my monitors slightly shook. I thought I only imagined what just happened but it felt so real, so I checked the internet and found out there was really a strong earthquake in Mindanao. While I was reading the report from USGS , another slight shake happened at 7:16am. We are lucky to experience only slight tremors here in Cebu City. I just hope the quake did not result to any serious damages.
